The Initial Group Stresses the Importance of Summer Safety

June 2005 - KNOXVILLE , Tenn-The sunny days of summer are filled with hiking and biking trips, beach vacations and afternoons spent in the garden, however, along with the fun of summer comes a myriad of dangers including drowning, heat stroke and damaging ultraviolet rays. The Initial Group, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Baptist Health System of East Tennessee, reminds parents, adults and teens of the importance of taking precautions and avoiding dangers while enjoying the activities of summer "Studies show the most dangerous time for preventable injuries and deaths among children is between the summer months of May to July,&qout; said Dr. A. Dean Mire, a family practice physician with Baptist Health System of East Tennessee. "Children are not the only ones who need to take precautions during these warm months since more than one million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, the majority of which are attributed to sun exposure.&qout;

With all the warnings related to summer activities, some wonder if the only way to be safe is by avoiding them completely. The Initial Group suggests ways to still enjoy the season while decreasing the chance of illnesses and accidents. Following are some helpful tips for adults and teens as well:
  • Closely watch children near water since 70 percent of parents whose children drown in swimming pools say they did not hear or see anything indicating their child was in danger.
  • Wear life jackets while in the water, especially while swimming in the lake and riding in a boat.
  • Know CPR in case someone around you is in trouble.
  • Avoid hot mid-day temperatures by planning outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon to prevent over-exertion and heat related illnesses such as heat stroke.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to avoid dehydration.
  • Protect skin from the sun's damaging rays by wearing a hat that shades the face, neck and ears, sunglasses with UV protection for the eyes and waterproof sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher.
From water safety to heat and sun precautions, enjoying the warm temperatures and outdoor activities of the season means practicing summer safety on every level.
